Japanese Sojitz to participate in reconstruction of Khabarovsk Airport

Tokyo hosted a meeting between a Russian delegation headed by Yury Trutnev, the Russian Presidential Envoy in the Russian Far East, and representatives of Sojitz Corporation, a Japanese company. The parties focused on a project contemplating the construction and operation of a new passenger terminal at Khabarovsk International Airport. The Japanese businessmen are ready to take part in its implementation by establishing a consortium from among investors. Apart from Sojitz Corporation, it may include JATCO, a major Japanese airport infrastructure operator, with the former being in charge of coordinating the parties participating in the project and the latter assuming the management of the newly created terminal infrastructure.

Financing will be arranged with the support of the Japanese Government using funds of dedicated investment funds. It is expected that a joint venture company will be incorporated based on Khabarovsk International Airport joint-stock company. In the course of the meeting, the parties also agreed on establishing a special task team. It will comprise representatives of the Russian Ministry for Development of Russian Far East as well as Japanese and national investors. They will promptly address all issues which may arise when implementing the project.

The upgrading of the Khabarovsk Airport must turn it into a major transport and logistics hub and attract tourists in the Region. In March 2016, Far East Development Corporation and Khabarovsk International Airport joint-stock company executed an agreement on carrying out activities in the Khabarovsk priority social and economic development area. The project also contemplates the second phase – development of commercial space in the adjacent area, so-called AirCity. The reconstruction of the second takeoff strip must also be completed at the Khabarovsk Airport in 2017.
