On a recent day, the Russian Government's Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree creating Gorny Vozdukh and Yuzhnaya, priority social and economic development areas, in the island region. The former is based on the similarly named mountain-skiing, sports and tourist facility located on the slopes of the Bolshevik Mountain in close vicinity to the city of Yuzhno Sakhalinsk. This area will also include Sinegorsk Mineral Waters health retreat, Nevelsk's coastal area and the Moneron Island. In wintertime, Yuzhno Sakhalinsk attracts a large number of tourists who are fond of mountain skiing and snowboarding.
Investors intend to implement seven projects here for a total amount exceeding RUB 6.1 billion. It is planned that 60 kilometers of ski trails, 9 new rope-ways, 600-bed hotels and cottages and 220-seat restaurants and cafeteria will be created in the Gorny Vozdukh area until 2020.
