A medical genetics lab opens in Siberia

The country's first Russian and Italian medical genetics laboratory has opened in Krasnoyarsk. The opening ceremony took place on the 12th of February based on the Krasnoyarsk State Medical University. This was reported by KRASNOYARSK State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company.

The country's first Russian and Italian medical genetics laboratory has opened in Krasnoyarsk. The opening ceremony took place on the 12^th of February based on the Krasnoyarsk State Medical University. This was reported by KRASNOYARSK State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company. The laboratory will primarily offer diagnostic services and do genetic tests. The technology presented in the institution will enable diagnosing rare and complex genetic diseases relating to cardiology, pulmonology and paediatrics. It will also employ a specialist who will advise patients.

"Today we know that genetics underlies these diseases. Sometimes, there are no clinical implications at all, but we understand that sooner or later they will appear. More proactive and efficient aid will be provided to patents requiring medical supervision", Valery Sakovich, the Chief Doctor of the Federal Heart Diseases Center, told.

Equipment and personnel training have been provided by Italian specialists free of charge. The center, however, will use home-made chemical agents.

"When I was arranging this project, I had it covered in mass media and the Internet. A lot of industrial enterprises desired to cooperate. This points to the fact that we are heading in the right direction. International relations are of very great importance", Matteo Bertelli, the Director of the Medical Genetics Institute (Italy), noted.

Currently, tests are carried out on a paid basis but prospects of including them in the Compulsory Health Insurance System are being considered. Specialists from the Krasnoyarsk State Medical University are now preparing necessary filings to apply for appropriate licenses.
