Azerbaijan in talks with Russia to increase electricity import

Azerbaijan started negotiations for increase of electricity import from Russia, head of the Public Relations Department of the Azerbaijan’s energy company Azerenerji Yahya Babanli said.

"Azerbaijan started talks to increase electric power import from Russia. Chief executive of Azerenerji Etibar Pirverdiev leads the negotiating process from the Azerbaijani side," Babanli said. He did not detail import volumes.

The Russian energy company Inter RAO said earlier that electricity supplies to Azerbaijan started from Monday night within the framework of the emergency mutual assistance agreement. "We are supplying electric power to Azerbaijan within the framework of the emergency mutual assistance agreement from 23.45 of yesterday. 200 MW are supplied," the company said.

Electric power outage occurred on a greater part of Azerbaijan’s territory at night from Monday to Tuesday. The cause was an accident at a tie station of the Mingechaur Power Plant, where a portion of system equipment became inoperable due to a heat wave, according to information from the Azerenerji CEO.

According to official data, power supply disturbances affected 39 cities and districts of Azerbaijan. The problem with power supply has been partly resolved and activities continue to fully restore electricity supplies, Azerenerji said.
