The liquorice root-processing factory in Astrakhan in the South of the European part of Russia will export the first ten tons of its liquorice extract (otherwise called glycyrrhizinic acid) to Japan where it is used as a base for manufacturing antiviral pharmaceuticals.
The Astrakhan factory, operated by a Russian-Japanese joint venture — the first in this field — launched production in spring 2018. The agreement to build the facility was signed in 2014. The Japanese partner, Koki Systems Ltd, invested $4m in the factory in Krasnoyarsk District of Astrakan Region to produce more than 90 t of glycyrrhizinic acid annually.
