A new deep-water sea port with a passenger terminal will be built on the White Sea in Karelia, the region’s acting minister of economic development and industry, Alexander Lomako, told a regional investment conference.
"A project to build a new deep-water sea port is in line with the program for development of the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic navigation," he said. "Under the project, the port will have a passenger terminal and will serve passenger voyages between Belomorsk and Solovki - this is a certain point for development of tourism."
The port may become a hub, which will "connect the Oktyabrskaya and the Northern railways with the international transport corridor," the minister continued, though he did not specify when the project would be implemented.
Karelia’s Ministry of Economic Development and Industry told TASS "investments in the project are estimated at $270 million."
