Kemerovo Region in South Siberia, the traditional producer and exporter of coal, added cocoa powder and chocolates to its key exports, to become one of the top three Russian cocoa product exporters, with its 38,000 tons of cocoa worth $81.6million exported in 2017 (15%), following Moscow and Moscow Region with their collective 47% share.

In the meantime, coal remained Kemerovo’s No. 1 export (79%) in 2017, which took the South Siberian region to the fourth place, with a 5% share in the national coal export total, while chocolates (1% of Kemerovo’s total exports) ranked sixth in the region’s sales abroad and a key element in its exports of food. Kemerovo’s exports of cocoa products (predominantly chocolate and chocolate confectionery) surged in 2017 by 48% in physical volume and by 24% in value terms on the previous year. The main importers of Kemerovo’s chocolates in 2017 were China (which accounted for 37% of the region’s exports), Kazakhstan (32%) and Kyrgyzstan (9%).
