New priority development area resident to create Internet hub at Kamchatka

Telecom 41 has joined the Kamchatka priority development area as a new resident. The investor will provide telecommunication carriers with wide band satellite channels featuring capacities of up to 1.5–2 Gbps. This will provide the residents of 34 settlements with high quality Internet access.

The resident will invest RUB 206.7 million in the project and will create 72 job opportunities. This Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky-based Internet Hub will use a brand new satellite Internet access. It is based on modern technology enabling multiple accesses via satellite radio links allowing to remarkably reduce the price of the services provided.

The project will be implemented in three phases. At the first phase, high speed Internet connection will be made available in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and another 7 settlements as early as in 2016. Another 18 cities and villages will be connected in the next year. At the final phase, in 2018, the new technology will be available in another 9 settlements.

We remind that Kamchatka is among the few Russian Regions where the Internet is still accessed via satellite channels only. Currently, work is ongoing to lay optic fiber cables along the bottom of the Sea of Okhotsk; however, today "satellite" Internet access remains the most accessible channel for all residents of the peninsular. The emergence of the new provider of wide band satellite channels for telecommunication companies will have a direct effect on the quality of services provided and population coverage.
