Protected ground vegetable growing in the Sakhalin Region will develop based on the Japanese experience. In the next few years, a number of greenhouse compounds will be erected in locations of the island region to provide the residents of Sakhalin and Kurils with fresh vegetables and herbs. The knowledge accumulated by our neighbors will be of service given the fact that they work in climatic conditions that are similar to ours. This conclusion was draw by Governor Oleg Kozhemyako after visiting Kinoko Soken, a greenhouse facility in the city of Kuriyama situated on the Japanese island Hokkaido.

This enterprise specializes in growing Shiitake, a popular mushroom actively used in the Asian cuisine. It outputs up to 6 tonnes of the product on a daily basis. However, achieving such a result is not a simple mission. First of all, it is necessary to carefully maintain required temperature and humidity. The use of modern greenhouses makes this possible. It is them the Sakhalin delegation placed a special deal of focus on.

The greenhouse solutions employed by Kinoko Soken are capable of withstanding heavy snowfalls and strong winds that are normal for both Hokkaido, Sakhalin and Kurils as well. Their light frames are made of steel tubes and the greenhouses are covered with two layers of frost-proof extra-strong film. Their external layer serves as thermal insulation. Should it become too hot inside, automatic controls elevate it opening access to fresh air. And the second layer protects vegetables from destructive insects. Such greenhouses are manufactured by Kosiura Pipe.

The Sakhalin Region needs the greenhouses to grow fresh vegetables and green stuff. Their potential production in the island region was discussed between the Governor and Masatosi Kosiura, the CEO of Kosiura Pipe. In 2015, the company supplied 2 pilot greenhouses to Teplichny State Farm and Konstantinov peasant farm enterprise. The products were highly appreciated by the Sakhalin agricultural producers. Oleg Kozhemyako believes that it is about time to switch over from presentations to permanent cooperation. Now, it is required to arrange for the purchase of greenhouse film from Japan while the manufacturing of steel work needs to be set up in Sakhalin.
