The potential participation of Japanese enterprises in Sakhalin-related tourist projects has been discussed at the headquarters of the Regional Government. Investors from the neighboring country have been offered to take part in upgrading Gorny Vozdukh, a sports and tourist facility. The list of proposals includes the construction of hotels, restaurants and other facilities. This and other matters have been discussed at a meeting of Governor Oleg Kozhemyako and Consul General of Japan in Yuzhno-Sakhalinks Akira Imamura.

Japan is one of the Sakhalin Region's strategic partners. For eleven months of 2015, the Region's foreign trade turnover involving Japan exceeded US$5.3 billion. This is almost a half of total trading operations between the Sakhalin and foreign businesses. In January to November 2015, however, the Sakhalin Region's foreign trade turnover involving Japan reduced by 24.3% y.o.y. This reduction in trading operations was dictated by export operations that fell by 24.8%. At the same time, import operations increased by 23.2%.
