Cuba to produce drugs for diabetics in Russia

At the meeting of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission, Russian pharmaceutical company “Farmeko” and Cuban company “Eber Biotech” signed an agreement on cooperation. “Eber Biotech” is an exclusive distributor of Havana Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology that has developed a drug “Heberprot-P”.

At the meeting of the Russian-Cuban Intergovernmental Commission, Russian pharmaceutical company “Farmeko” and Cuban company “Eber Biotech” signed an agreement on cooperation. “Eber Biotech” is an exclusive distributor of Havana Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology that has developed a drug “Heberprot-P”. According to the agreement, this drug can be produced in Russia.

“Heberprot-P” comes in injection form and is allowed for use in Russia. The drug is intended to treat trophic foot ulcers, which are common in patients with diabetes. The drug has been used in Cuba since 2007 and is exported in Latin America and Southeast Asia. “Heberprot-P” is produced from genetically modified yeast with special implemented gene. The drug is injected along the perimeter of the wound; the healing occurs within a month.

The plan is to launch production in 2018 after the full cycle of clinical testing. Today the drug is used for trial treatment in Moscow, Kaluga and Nizhny Novgorod. The cost of the treatment is about 500 thousand rubles and may decrease by one third after the launch of production.
